Medicaid expansion in New York now covers transgender healthcare

Youths in New York are now covered by Medicaid to receive gender-transition care, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal.

The court-ordered coverage expansion is a major victory for transgender activists because, until March 2016, there was a regulation banning Medicaid coverage for all transition-related care.

Things like medically necessary hormone treatment and surgeries for transgender youths are covered under the new legislation, which can help individuals struggling with dysphoria, a condition in which they feel their gender identity and biological sex do not match.
