Is the 'Golden Age' of antiobotics in our rearview mirror?
Some experts are now saying the “golden age of antibiotics” is behind us, according to the Los Angeles Times. The ability to stop a bacterial infection in its tracks is a thing of the past, because more and more antibiotic-resistant gene markers are showing up in bacteria in the U.S.
One particularly worrying sign is that a colistin-resistant gene was found in the E. coli bacteria from an infected woman in the U.S. That gene could move to other similar (or even not similar) bacteria and spread, infecting more people without the ability to treat them.
