The challenges and pitfalls of reporting on health research
With findings and recommendations constantly being updated, where does media coverage fit in?
That was the question asked recently by Boston Magazine. Almost every day, media outlets report on new and innovative health and medical studies, yet as time passes, some of that “new” information is updated and changed. Some conclusions change naturally as knowledge develops; others were likely reached haphazardly in the “publish or perish” environment of academia.
The question, then, becomes whether covering new studies is a service to the audience, or a hindrance.
