Legislators introduce framework for medical innovation legislation
Legislators on the House Energy and Commerce Committee have unveiled a framework to guide bipartisan legislation advancing innovation in health technology. It’s part of its 21st Century Cure initiative launched earlier this year.
Following eight hearings and four roundtables in Washington, D.C., as well as 15 roundtables hosted by committee members throughout the country, the committee has narrowed the initiative to the following six areas for reform:
- Integrate the patient’s perspective into the regulatory process
- Modernize clinical trials
- Foster the future of science, including encouraging young scientists
- Invest in advancing research
- Incentivize the development of new drugs and devices for unmet medical needs
- Support 21st century digital medicine by facilitating data sharing and the use of new technologies.
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) are expected to introduce a discussion draft of legislation in January 2015.
