Jury still out on HIEs

Despite taking in $600 million in federal investment, it remains uncertain whether the promised benefits of health information exchanges will be being realized, according to a RAND Corp. study. 

The study, summarized in Forbes, reveals that there is a small amount of information showing that HIEs are reducing emergency department costs--but the benefits stop there.
