FSMB moves one step closer to Interstate Medical Licensure Compact

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) has completed the drafting process for model legislation to establish an Interstate Medical Licensure Compact.

A statement from FSMB, a national nonprofit representing the 70 medical and osteopathic boards, said the compact would help accelerate the process of issuing licenses for physicians who desire to practice in multiple states. It also establishes the location of a patient as the jurisdiction for oversight and patient protections.

“With the drafting process complete, state legislatures and medical boards can now begin to consider the adoption of this model legislation establishing an interstate medical licensure compact,” said Humayun J. Chaudhry, MD, president and CEO of FSMB, in a statement.

Participation in the interstate compact would be voluntary for both states and physicians. It is expected to facilitate licensure portability and telemedicine while expanding access to health care by physicians, particularly in underserved areas of the nation, according to FSMB.
