House Committee considering legislation on clinical data registries

The House Energy and Commerce Committee is considering legislation that would require the Department of Health & Human Services to publish specific recommendations for the development of clinical data registries.

“As we have seen with the committee’s efforts to replace the broken SGR formula, data registries hold great promise for the future of healthcare in this country. However, expertise in their construction and operation varies significantly,” according to a statement from Fred Upton (R-Mich.)

The legislation, introduced on July 28 by Rep. Pete Olson (R-Texas), specifically would encourage the development and dissemination of best practices to support registry development that works for patients, provider groups and other stakeholders.
