KLAS report: HIE solutions not meeting provider demands

Providers are reporting less satisfaction with health information exchange (HIE) solutions as provider demands have outpaced vendor delivery, according to a recently published report by KLAS, a Utah-based research firm. In its survey of 219 public and private providers, KLAS reported that overall satisfaction has dipped 8 percent.

As part of the report, providers offered input in the areas of HIE solution reliability, relevance and transformation. HIE products discussed in the report include those from Allscripts, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Epic, ICA, InterSystems, Medicity, NextGen, Optum (Axolotl), Orion Health, RelayHealth and Siemens.

"What is surprising is that despite the millions of dollars HIE vendors invested to add needed functionality, only about half of them are seeing their provider satisfaction scores improve," said report author Mark Allphin, who is a senior research director at KLAS. "Payment reform and the future of accountable care continue to keep many vendors struggling to keep up with provider demands."
