CMS’ esMD system popular among providers
Healthcare providers are increasingly using digital documentation in Medicare review programs, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Since the agency implemented the Electronic Submission of Medical Documentation (esMD) system, the number of participants utilizing the program has grown steadily. The system, based on the standards developed by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, allows providers to send medical documentation to review contractors electronically. As of Sept. 30, 2013:
- 30,199 Medicare providers (hospitals, physicians and other medical providers) used esMD to respond to medical record requests
- 55 Medicare providers used esMD to submit prior authorization requests
- 24 health information handlers were certified by CMS to offer esMD services
CMS said it's planning a number of enhancements to the system, including allowing providers to submit first level appeals requests; allowing providers to submit discussion requests; and allowing providers to submit structured electronic clinical templates.
