Former clinic employee stole patient data

A former employee stole protected health information from a Colorado spine clinic. An employee in the billing department of the Rocky Mountain Spine Clinic, Lone Tree, created a document containing the information of 532 patients and then sent the document to her personal email account, according to a report published by the Denver Post.

The clinic fired the employee and filed a police report with the Lone Tree Police Department. In an interview with police, the employee said she did not share the information and deleted the document after sending it.

According to the article, the employee emailed the information so she could work from home. The clinic does not plan to press charges.

The document contained patient names, insurance company information and tracked patient surgeries but did not have any patient credit card numbers.

The clinic hired a computer forensic specialist to examine the former employee's personal computer and email account, according to the report. The specialist concluded that neither the computer nor email account contained patient information.
