CMS offers insight on CQMs specs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has added three new frequently asked questions (FAQ) relating to clinical quality measures (CQMs) specifications under the EHR Meaningful Use program.

CMS clarifies that:

  • Developers do not need to seek re-testing/recertification of their certified complete EHR or certified EHR module when CMS releases new versions of clinical quality measures (CQMs) specifications. In other words, EHR technology that has been issued a certification based on the December 2012 version will remain certified even when CMS releases new versions of CQMs specifications; however, the agency encourages technology developers to update to the newest CQMs specifications as they become available.
  • Developers can update their EHR technology from “version 1” CQMs specs to “version 2” without seeking additional testing and certification. However, in this circumstance developers need to contact the Office of the National Health IT Coordinator-Authorized Certification Body to submit an inherited certified status request to update their information with the agency.
  • Developers can test and certify the newest available version of the CQM specifications when its EHR technology otherwise has yet to receive certification.
