Fla. optometry practice breach impacts 9K

About 9,000 patients were impacted when an unauthorized individual or company accessed and copied all or parts of the EHR system at Sight and Sun Eyeworks Gulf Breeze in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

“Sight and Sun Eyeworks Gulf Breeze believes the records were accessed only to offer other medical services and not to commit identity theft,” according to a notice from parent company Gulf Breeze Family Eyecare. “However, patients should closely monitor their credit card, bank and other financial statements for signs of fraud and identity theft.”

The Pensacola News Journal reported that clinical and demographic information, along with Social Security numbers, were among the compromised data. A notice on the practice's website said that it has conducted an investigation, but does not say whether law enforcement has been involved.
