ICS Software Ltd.'s SammyEHR to Now Offer PECOS Lookup for Referring Doctors

Oceanside, NY April 14, 2013 -- ICS Software of New York now offers the ability to automatically check PECOS eligibility of referring doctors through their EHR program, SammyEHR. The need for this feature is explained in CMS’ March 2013 issue of Medicare Enrollment Guidelines for Ordering/Referring Providers, which states that “Effective May 1, 2013, CMS will turn on the edits to deny Part B, DME, and Part A HHA claims that fail the ordering/referring provider edits. Once the edit activates, if the billed service requires an ordering/referring provider and the ordering/referring provider is not identified on the claim, the claim will not be paid. If the ordering/referring provider is identified on the claim, but is not enrolled in Medicare, the claim will not be paid. In addition, if the ordering/referring provider is identified on the claim, but is not of a specialty that is eligible to order/refer, the claim will not be paid. CMS encourages laboratories, imaging centers, DMEPOS suppliers, and HHAs to work with their ordering/referring providers to ensure they are prepared for this change.”

Integration of this referring doctor check will halt rejections based on the new edit, and will keep money flowing to the office. Stacey Brady, Manager of Customer Support at ICS, stated that she “has thoroughly tested the new feature” and that “it works intuitively and automatically with SammyEHR’s built-in NPI directory. SammyEHR will warn the client when a referring doctor has not been enrolled in PECOS.“ This process will save the time it takes to sift through rejections and make phone calls to providers regarding their PECOS enrollment status.
