CMS offers MU audit guidance
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has published guidance on Meaningful Use (MU) audits being conducted by its contractor, Figliozzi and Company. States also are conducting their own audits for the Medicaid EHR incentive program.
Post-payment audits of organizations that received MU incentive payments began in 2012 and pre-payment audits have been added this year. An overview of the audits programs, including the expected audit process, are available via an Audit Overview Fact Sheet.
To be ready for an audit if selected, providers now have access to a five-page CMS Supporting Documentation for Audits Fact Sheet for guidance on what types of information are requested and how to comply, including suggested documentation for non-percentage-based objectives. Also available are sample audit request letters for eligible professionals and hospitals.
