Mass. statewide HIE goes live

The Massachusetts Health Information Exchange (HIE) went live Oct. 16, when Gov. Deval Patrick clicked send to transmit the information in his EHR from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to Baystate Health in Springfield.

Patrick celebrated the launch of the statewide HIE, also known as “Mass HIway,” with representatives from 11 health systems and received confirmation of receipt from Baystate Health via videoconference.

“Quality, safety and efficiency depend upon sharing of healthcare information among patients, providers and payers with patient consent,” said John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, in a statement. “The Massachusetts HIway makes that possible. As of October 16, 2012, healthcare information silos begin to disappear.”
