The West Virginia Health Information Network (WVHIN) launched a statewide health information exchange (HIE) to connect physicians, laboratories, hospitals and other stakeholders.

A public-private partnership worked with early adopters, such as Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling and West Virginia University (WVU) Healthcare in Morgantown, to build a database with information on 2.1 million patients, including 37 million lab results, 96 million diagnoses, 2.4 million allergies and 88 million patient visits over the past six years.

“Implementing our HIE at Wheeling Hospital and WVU Healthcare allows us to quickly achieve unparalleled interoperability throughout our state’s facilities,” WVHIN Chief Operating Officer C. Douglas Shaw said in an Aug. 22 statement.

WVHIN will focus its post-launch efforts on attracting more providers to the HIE.
