The Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN) has implemented the Direct project, an initiative supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services aimed at simplifying the way patients and providers exchange health information electronically.

In order to participate in the Direct project, the South Bend, Ind.-based health information exchange (HIE) first had to register as a federally-compliant health information service provider (HISP), which allows the HIE’s participating members to message each other, as well as individuals belonging to HISPs that have exchanged trust certificates with MHIN.

Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Ind., became the first rural Indiana facility to pilot Direct mail through MHIN and has plans to expand Direct messaging beyond lab results in the future, according to a MHIN statement.
