Blumenthal to take helm at Commonwealth Fund

The Commonwealth Fund's board of directors has named David Blumenthal, MD, the next president to succeed Karen Davis on Jan. 1, 2013.

Blumenthal, currently serves as the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief health information and innovation officer at Partners HealthCare System in Boston, and as the chairman of the Commonwealth Fund's Commission on a High Performance Health System. Blumenthal served from 2009 to 2011 as U.S. National Coordinator for Health IT, with the charge to build an interoperable, private and secure nationwide health information system and to support the meaningful use of health IT.

Prior to his appointment as the national coordinator for health IT, Blumenthal was a practicing primary care physician; director of the Institute for Health Policy; and professor of medicine and health policy at Massachusetts General Hospital/Partners HealthCare System and Harvard Medical School. He also has served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Health and Scientific Research; is the founding chairman of AcademyHealth, the national organization of health services researchers; and a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.

He will be replacing Davis as the current president, who has served in the position since March 2010.
