Philips, Brainlab team on intra-operative MRI

Royal Philips Electronics and Brainlab have formed a collaboration to develop an intra-operative system with the goal of streamlining neurosurgery procedures.

Ingenia MR-OR, which is expected to be available at the end of 2012, is based on Philips' digital broadband Ingenia MRI system, which comes in both 1.5T and 3T field strengths, and is designed to be combined with Brainlab’s OR systems.

The Philips’ MR-OR system is designed to allow neurosurgeons to visualize the results of neurological procedures. This permits access of patient information to facilitate surgical decision making. In addition, the technology allows for removal of a residual amount of a tumor before the surgical procedure is finished, according to North Andover, Mass.-based Philips.

Ingenia MR-OR is based on a two-room configuration, making it possible for the system to be used both for intra-operative as well as for standard diagnostic imaging. The system can be used with two operating rooms, one on each side of the MRI magnet.

Philips and Brainlab will showcase their recent developments together at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in Miami, April 14-18.
