MITA gives ONC a nod for including image requirements in Stage 2

The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) has commended the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) for its recent inclusion of proposed use requirements for medical imaging information in Certified EHR Technology as an objective of Stage Two Meaningful Use Criteria.

The proposed Stage Two Meaningful Use Criteria objectives will require that more than 40 percent of scans and tests whose result is one or more images ordered by certain individuals or entities during the EHR reporting period are accessible via Certified EHR Technology. The ONC also is considering that 10 percent of scans accessible through Certified EHR Technology be exchanged with another provider of care.

“MITA is pleased that the ONC has recognized, for the first time, the importance of the capability of viewing images and imaging information,” said Gail Rodriguez, executive director of MITA.

MITA advocates image sharing among healthcare providers via the DICOM 3.0 imaging data exchange standard.
