CMS posts guidelines for EHR incentive appeals

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is implementing an appeals process for its Medicare EHR incentive program and posted guidelines on how to appeal a payment decision on its website.

A contract for the administrative review of appeals was awarded to appeals support contractor Provider Resources, according to CMS' website. Erie, Pa.-based Provider Resources will work with the CMS Office of Clinical Standards and Quality to provide customer service support and technical assistance, but appeals will be filed via a Provider Resources web portal.

A final rule published in December 2011 on the EHR incentive program established a process for appealing payment decisions made through the Medicaid EHR incentive program, but not for the Medicare EHR incentive program.
