Inmate shot, killed while trying to escape imaging facility

A deputy with the Jefferson County, Colo., Sheriff’s Office shot and killed an inmate who was attempting to escape during an exam at Advanced Medical Imaging’s Denver facility on Tuesday, Oct. 11, according to a report from KDVR-TV.

The inmate was to receive an MRI and the deputy was required to remove the inmate’s metal shackles.

Once freed from the shackles, the suspect fled down a hallway and the deputy fired one time, hitting the suspect. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to KDVR-TV.

One witness said there were “too many” patients in the facility at the time, perhaps 50, according to a report from KUSA-TV.

The suspect’s name was being withheld while authorities contacted his family, and an investigation is underway into the actions of the deputy.
