Bay State medical device makers project growth

Medical device industry executives in Massachusetts expect business to pick up over the next two quarters, according to a survey commissioned by the state industry association MassMedic.

Surveying 42 C-level executives in the first two weeks of August, MassMedic found that 63.2 percent expect sales to improve over the next six months. Meanwhile, 42.1 percent said they saw growth over the past six months.

“In this year’s survey, we observe a more active approach in the last six months, and more change in the right direction when looking at the second half of the year,” MassMedic President Tom Sommer said in a statement. “This demonstrates the sector’s unrelenting desire to forge ahead and maintain global standing in the industry even with the current economic climate.”

Of the companies represented in the survey, 52.6 percent made hires in the past six months while 28.9 percent downsized. In the next six months, 45.9 percent of company executives expect to add staff while just 8.1 percent expect to cut jobs.
