Infusion pump firms exchange suits over patents

Infusion pump maker B. Braun Medical has filed a multi-count lawsuit against a competitor, the San Diego-based CareFusion, for patent infringement. B. Braun is crying foul over CareFusion’s Alaris infusion pumps and its line of smart medication systems.

The Bethlehem, Pa.-based B. Braun names five patents in the suit, which its attorneys filed Aug. 28 in U.S. District Court in Chicago. “This lawsuit was necessary to protect B. Braun’s highly valuable technology and patent rights,” Gale White, B. Braun’s vice president of infusion systems, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Suzanne Hatcher of CareFusion told the Express Times of Lehigh Valley, Pa., that the suit comes just after CareFusion sued B. Braun. Hatcher told the newspaper that CareFusion filed its patent infringement lawsuit, which named a type of infusion pump valve connector, in California Aug. 23.

The legal documents in B. Braun v. CareFusion are posted here.
