athenahealth unveils cloud-based service

athenahealth, a developer of cloud-based business services for physician practices, released athenaCoordinator, a new cloud-based service designed to address systemic breakdowns that have prevented care coordination across the healthcare supply chain.

athenaCoordinator is the result of the company’s acquisition of Birmingham, Ala.-based Proxsys, which was publicly announced on July 21, and closed Sept. 31.

The Watertown, Mass.-based athenahealth said the service adds to its existing service offering of integrated revenue cycle management, EHR and patient communication services. Over time, the company plans to expand this service to accommodate a broader community of critical healthcare entities, such as independent labs and pharmacies.

The service includes:
  • Order transmission: Delivers orders to hospitals, imaging centers and surgery centers by facilitating order entry and status for physicians and enables pre-certification and pre-registration.
  • Pre-certification: Verifies eligibility, benefits and obtaining insurance pre-certifications.
  • Pre-registration: A team of specialists provides pre-registration services to ensure order fulfillment, registering patients in the hospital system and collecting self-pay balances.
