Texas provider names regional medical informatics officer

Christus Santa Rosa Health System of San Antonio has named George Gellert, MD, for the newly created regional medical informatics officer position.

The move is a proactive measure designed to keep the health system ahead of industry trends, according to James C. Martin, MD, chief medical officer of Christus Santa Rosa.

“By recognizing the critical role that electronic health records and health information exchange will have in the future of Christus Santa Rosa, the position was developed to engage physicians through education, communication and training to obtain the necessary competencies needed by our medical staff to be successful in the meaningful use information technologies,” Martin said.

Most recently, Gellert had a consulting career based in Portland, Ore. Previously, he served within the health information industry, government and philanthropy. He was CMO and executive vice president for HCORP, senior vice president for strategic alliances with WebMD, senior international health specialist for the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency, medical director of Project HOPE and head of disease management at SmithKline Beecham Healthcare Services.
