VA, MedVirginia HIE pilot is under way

The Richmond VA Medical Center is partnering with MedVirginia on a Department of Veterans Affairs pilot project to improve delivery of veterans' health information.

The VA selected the Richmond area for the pilot because of its high concentration of veterans, military retirees and members of the National Guard and Reserve. The Richmond pilot will build on knowledge  gained in Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER) program pilots in San Diego and Hampton Roads/Tidewater, Va., according to the VA.

Participants will exchange information using the Nationwide Health Information Network framework, the VA stated.

Veterans in the area will be invited to participate in this health data exchange program, which went live in March. Those who choose to participate will authorize their public and private sector healthcare providers and doctors to share specific health information electronically, safely and securely. No exchange of information will occur without patients' permission, the VA stated.
