athenahealth appoints CMIO
athenahealth has appointed Todd Rothenhaus, MD, to the newly created position of CMIO.
Rothenhaus will contribute to product development, implementation and client support, compliance and risk assessment, and sales support and physician advocacy, according to athenahealth, a Watertown, Mass.-based provider of cloud-based practice management, EHR and patient communication services to medical groups.
Most recently, Rothenhaus was senior vice president and CIO of Steward Health Care System, based in Boston, where he implemented a plan to automate care delivery, deployed inpatient EHR and integrated ambulatory EHR systems, and positioned the health system to qualify for meaningful use dollars and to become an accountable care organization.
Prior to his role at Steward Health Care, Rothenhaus served as medical director at Boston Medical Center’s Newton Emergency Department and director of informatics at Boston University's Department of Emergency Medicine. He began his career as an attending physician at Boston Medical Center's Emergency Department. He has served as chairman of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology's ED Workgroup, and has held a number of academic appointments.
Rothenhaus received a BS in Engineering from Tulane University and an MD from George Washington University. He completed his internship and residency with George Washington University Hospital and George Washington/Georgetown University, respectively.
