First stage of Canada's first province-wide EHR is live

The first stage of a $22.5 million project to create an EHR system for the province of Manitoba has gone live, providing clinicians with access to their patients' lab results, dispensed drug records and immunization histories.

EChart Manitoba, the first province-wide EHR system in Canada, enables information about a patient's health to be shared securely among authorized healthcare professionals across Manitoba, according to IBM, which provided project management, change management, analysis and design services for the project's first stage.

IBM's Initiate software was used in the project, and the company managed a consortium of subcontractors including dbMotion, which provided the software platform that enables healthcare organizations to access and share data, IBM stated.

The next stage of the project is slated to be completed by December, and will include diagnostic imaging as well as additional clinical information, the company added.
