Survey: CMIOs drive a range of health IT efforts

CMIOs are leading the charge on meaningful use, clinical informatics and integrating physician practices—and they’re in demand, according to a recent survey conducted by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) in cooperation with CMIO.

The online survey of CHIME members was conducted from Feb. 1 to Feb. 15, and garnered 93 responses. Some of the results include:

  • Among facilities that don’t currently have a CMIO, nearly half—42 percent—said they plan to hire one in the coming year.
  • Integrating group practices and clinics is a shared task for 62 percent of respondents.
  • CMIOs bear primarily responsibility for regulatory compliance in 61 percent of facilities.

Survey respondents were predominantly from multi-hospital organizations/integrated delivery networks and 80 percent of respondents work in facilities with more than 200 beds.

CHIME, based in Chicago, serves the professional development needs of healthcare CIOs and senior health IT leaders, and advocates for more effective use of information management within healthcare.
