COCIR: Telemedicine taking off in Belgium
Agoria, the Belgian federation for the technology industry and a member of the European Coordination Committee of the Radiological Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry (COCIR), has released a position paper on telemedicine describing the benefits of telemedicine solutions for patients and the barriers to the adoption of telemedicine in Belgium.
Agoria formulated a recommendation to accelerate the deployment of telemedicine in the country: From an expert study to assess the cost effectiveness of telemedicine solutions, the creation of a framework for reimbursement of these services, especially for chronic patients, the clarification of legal and deontological aspects to the creation of a strategic committee comprising all relevant stakeholders.
“Telemedicine is a promising development for the future, in particular for chronic patients,” said Belgian Health Minister Laurette Onkelinx. “The Belgian government supports the development of six pilot projects in the country with a view to draw a general framework for telemedicine in Belgium and consider with stakeholders how to create a new nomenclature that would allow the reimbursement of telemedicine services.”
