Aetna to acquire Medicity for $500M

Aetna has entered into an agreement to acquire Medicity, a health information exchange (HIE) technology company, for approximately $500 million.

Medicity offers products and services that enable health systems, hospitals, physician practices and HIEs to access and exchange healthcare information. The Salt Lake City-based company markets its products and services nationwide.

Medicity’s HIE technology is used in more than 760 hospitals, by 125,000 physicians and 250,000 end users. Medicity’s technology platform, combined with Aetna resources, will allow development of new business offerings, according to Aetna, a Hartford, Conn.-based insurance provider.

Medicity will operate as a separate business within Aetna, under its existing leadership structure.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust regulatory approval, and is projected to be neutral to Aetna’s financial results in 2011, Aetna stated.
