KLAS: ED docs disappointed by EDIS products

Many enterprise emergency department information systems (EDIS) are being employed by hospitals to replace standalone, best-of-breed solutions, but are resulting in disappointed ED clinicians, according to a recently published KLAS report.

Opinions of more than 500 providers were collected and the report found that 72 percent--2.5 times higher than the 2005 rate--are leaving a best-of-breed product in favor of an enterprise offering, which is said to offer better integration. Despite the number of facilities making a move to an EDIS, customers of vendors including Cerner, Eclipsys, McKesson and MediTech are reportedly having among the highest levels of buyer’s remorse, said the report.

Additionally, KLAS reported that most EDIS software from large enterprise vendors consistently score below its average for software satisfaction. On the other hand, five of the top six rated offerings are best-of-breed products, according to the report.

Less intuitive and efficient clinical functionality was the main reason for dissatisfaction among ED clinicians cited by the KLAS report.

The report also found Wellsoft's EDIS maintained its position as the top-rated product for the third consecutive KLAS performance study with a score of 89.9 out of a possible 100. Epic Systems' ASAP ED followed at 86.5 and Allscripts' ED and Medhost's EDMS tied for third, both at 85.3.
