New proton therapy center opens in Oklahoma
The ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City has opened its second treatment room, allowing for the expansion of the number of patients, as well as the types of tumors that the center can treat.
According to the center, which is affiliated with Integris Health, the facility will now be able to accommodate patients with more anatomically complex tumor types, including tumors along the spinal cord and at the base of the skull and many pediatric cancers.
Future plans include the opening of two additional treatment rooms--slated to open by the spring of 2010--which will allow the therapy center to treat 1,500 patients yearly, said the center.
An alternative to x-ray radiation, proton therapy is a method of treatment said to spare healthy tissues and result in fewer short-, as well as long-term side effects, said Bloomington, Ind.-based ProCure.
