Axolotl powers Santa Cruz HIE in California NHIN demonstration

Physicians Medical Group of Santa Cruz County, Calif., a founding member of the Santa Cruz Health Information Exchange (HIE), and Axolotl, a provider of HIE solutions and related services, have demonstrated a clinical HIE with multiple communities using Axolotl's Elysium Exchange.

Using the recently released Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) Connect software, five members of the California eHealth Collaborative--including the Santa Cruz HIE--verified the capability to share patient clinical information among regional networks in California. Kaiser Permanente, Long Beach Network for Health, ER Connect-Orange County, Redwood MedNet and Santa Cruz HIE verified the capability to share patient clinical information among regional networks across the state.

The San Jose, Calif.-based Axolotl said the public test demonstrated how clinicians can treat a patient within an ambulatory or emergency room care setting by obtaining critical clinical information from the patient's EMR from other HIEs.

This demonstration showed that any community based HIE or provider network that conforms to the NHIN standards can securely exchange clinical information for treatment purposes, the company said.
