How conversational AI mitigates physician burnout

Physician burnout is undoubtedly a serious issue in the medical profession—and it often stems from physicians’ EHR use, which, by some estimates, accounts for up to six hours of their daily work load. That's six hours is not dedicated to visiting with patients, a new article in Forbes suggests.

Nuance CEO Mark Benjamin spoke with Forbes to better explain the concept of “conversational AI,” which he believes may help cure physician burnout.

“Conversational AI uses intelligence to convert speech not just into text, but into text with meaning,” Benjamin said. “It understands the speaker’s intent in context, responds with relevant and helpful information and extracts key structured data that can drive actions and analytics.”

Within healthcare, and specifically physician burnout, conversational AI allows physicians to be free from feeling “hostage to regulatory and technology demands,” Benjamin noted. It helps improve physician productivity and well-being, job satisfaction and patient outcomes.

Innovation within conversational AI is continually advancing. Benjamin said the next step in the evolution of conversational AI is virtual assistants. Innovators are working toward an “intelligent exam rooms” that listens to, captures and understand the conversations in the room, in real-time.

“The ultimate vision is to reinvent the entire doctor-patient experience in a way that allows clinical documentation to essentially write itself––and help cure physician burnout,” he said.
