Price transparency rules in Florida opposed by hospitals

Hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) in Florida would be required to provide information to patients about the potential costs of procedures under a proposed state regulation that the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) considers outside the state’s authority.

According to the News Service of Florida, FHA has argued in an administrative challenge that this kind of change could only be enacted through a new law, as providing the additional pricing information would increase costs for hospitals and ASCs in the state by more than $1 million.

The FHA has butted heads before with the administration of Gov. Rick Scott, the founder and ex-CEO of what became the largest for-profit hospital operator in the U.S., HCA. Scott once proposed pricing caps for hospitals, but the compromise legislation signed into law only required facilities to make “service bundles” information available on their websites.
