Hackensack Merdian Health would grow to a 15-hospital system in northern and central New Jersey under its new merger agreement with JFK Health.

Both based in Edison, New Jersey, the companies had previously announced an intent to affiliate in November 2016. After what they call “five months of due diligence,” the trustees from both health systems signed a definitive merger deal on May 2.

“Choosing the right partner that provides the highest-quality care and value to the communities we serve is essential. We are thrilled JFK wants to be part of Hackensack Meridian Health. We believe JFK Health will be a great addition to our network,” Hackensack co-CEO Robert C. Garrett said in a statement. “We will continue to improve the well-being of communities with more cost effective care that delivers quality, safe outcomes, clinical excellence and a superior experience.”

If the merger is approved by regulators, Hackensack would compromise 15 hospitals and academic medical centers, including JFK Health’s 498-bed facility, and integrate JFK’s neuroscience and rehabilitation institutes into the system.

The combined entity would employ 33,000 workers, according to Hackensack, and more than 7,000 physicians.

“Our merger with Hackensack Meridian Health emphasizes our desire to continue to deliver high quality and safe clinical services and further supports our numerous health initiatives," Michael Kleiman, DMD, chairman of JFK Health, said in a statement.

The deal will bring some additional investment to existing JFK facilities, reported NorthJersey.com. The merged entity plans to expand obstetrics and cardiology services, as well as bring a larger residency program to JFK’s Edison hospital.
