Aetna to spend $85M on New York HQ

Health insurer Aetna will spend $85 million on its new headquarters in New York City, with the state kicking in $24 million in tax credits and the city providing $6.2 million in tax abatements and exemptions.

The Hartford Courant reported Aetna will devote the spending to renovating, furnishing and equipping the 145,741 square feet of office space it’s leasing at 61 Ninth Ave., across from Google’s new corporate campus and Chelsea Market.

“As a corporate headquarters, finishes will be on the higher end,” the project description said.

Aetna announced in June it would move its corporate headquarters to New York from Hartford, Connecticut, where it has roots dating back to its founding as a fire insurance company in 1819. For now, around 6,000 of its employees are set to remain in Hartford.
