$200M donation will fund new health sciences college at UC Irvine

Philanthropists Susan and Henry Samueli have donated $200 million to the University of California, Irvine to establish new health sciences school focused on integrated healthcare delivery in their name.

The donation is the seventh-largest ever given to a single public university, according to the Los Angeles Times. The approach of the new college, as defined by UC Irvine, will incorporate conventional medicine, complementary and alternative medicines and evidence-based “self-care.”

“Despite our technological advances, too many people still suffer from chronic conditions such as pain, diabetes and heart disease or are caught in a cycle of taking too many medications,” Susan Samueli said in a statement. “We must change what we mean by ‘healthcare’ and how we train all who provide care, including physicians, nurses and pharmacists.”
