Have $13 to spare? You could’ve bought a hospital

The shuttered Mineral Area Regional Medical Center in Farmington, Missouri, was sold for just $13, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The 127-bed facility has been closed since January 2016, nine months after it was purchased by St. Louis-based BJC Healthcare. Its closure left only one hospital available in the 66,000-person county.

The buyer is nursing home operator Sharo Shirshekan. His $13 purchase price seemed to be just a token figure, as his attorney said he picked it because “considers the number 13 to be lucky.” He’ll have to pay a lot more to clean up the facility which BJC said may contain “significant amounts of absestos, mold and other potentially hazardous materials.” Shirshekan plans to transform it into a 48-bed inpatient mental health facility.
