UPMC names new CMIO

Robert Bart, MD, has been appointed as new chief medical information officer (CMIO) for the health services division of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

Bart has spent the last five years as CMIO for Los Angeles County’s health department, overseeing IT in four hospitals and 18 multispecialty ambulatory locations. He received his medical degree from the University of Hawaii in 1990, then completed a pediatrics residency, a pediatric chief residency and pediatric critical care fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.

“Dr. Bart brings a unique set of technology and people skills that will drive our efforts to adopt smart technology that improves care and the patient experience,” said Joel B. Nelson, MD, chief clinical officer of UPMC’s health services division. “We are excited to welcome him to a team with a long history of technology leadership and innovation.”

He’ll also take on clinical and academic roles, serving as associate professor with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s critical care medicine department and working as an intensivist at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
