Even though electronic health record (EHR) giant Epic is based in Wisconsin, it didn’t bid on a contract for serving seven state-run facilities, effectively ceding the 10-year, $33 million contract to rival Cerner.
Cerner outbid five smaller competitors, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The contract covers facilities run by the state’s Department of Health Services, including Central Wisconsin Center and Mendota Mental Health Institute, Madison; Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center, Mauston; Southern Wisconsin Center, Union Grove; Northern Wisconsin Center, Chippewa Falls; and Winnebago Mental Health Institute and the Wisconsin Resource Center, both near Oshkosh. It will be the first time the facilities have a shared EHR system.
“Currently, they create and maintain paper records that are supplemented with various facility-specific electronic applications,” said department spokesperson Jennifer Miller.
Epic has yet to comment on why it decided not to bid on the project.
