The new push for easier patient access to their health data from CMS will require some work on the part of the Office of National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), with the agency’s leaders not being shy about supporting its patient-centric goals in a briefing with reporters at HIMSS18 in Las Vegas.

When Indiana’s Goshen Health decided to de-affiliate from Indiana University Health in 2016, it knew its supply costs were going to increase for its 122-bed hospital, cancer center and 27 physician practice locations, according to chief financial officer Amy Floria. That meant waste in the supply chain had to be cut out—like the 80 percent of hospital supplies which had sat untouched on a shelf for two years.

Implementing a new Cerner electronic health record (EHR) system through the Veterans Administration (VA) system will involve 48 “deployment waves” beginning in 2019 and ending in 2027, according to a Cerner presentation at the HIMSS18 conference in Las Vegas.

Healthcare consumers appear quite comfortable with digital-based health tools, including those with artificial intelligence capabilities, according to a survey released by Accenture at the HIMSS18 conference in Las Vegas.

Health IT leaders, professionals and vendors saw few negatives in the new My HealthE Data initiative announced by CMS at the HIMSS18 conference in Las Vegas, even though CMS Administrator Seema Verma, MPH, warned that the agency would crack down on information blocking by vendors or providers.

As the healthcare professionals touch down in Las Vegas for the 2018 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the organization released its annual survey of the marketplace. HIMSS published the 2018 U.S. HIMSS Leadership and Workforce Survey on March 6, which examines trends in employment, technology and expectations.

The trend of costs increasingly being shifted onto patients continued in 2017 with average out-of-pocket costs hitting $1,813 in 2017, an 11 percent jump from the year before, according to an analysis released by TransUnion Healthcare at the HIMSS18 conference in Las Vegas.

This year, providers may be struggling with meeting deadlines on reporting for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and avoiding a negative payment adjustment. In a few years, however, they’ll expect solutions to more complicated issues surrounding value-based reimbursement, according to Tim Mills, chief growth officer at revenue cycle, coding and billing software company Alpha II.
